Handicap in betting: European and Asian handicaps explained

PitchMaths editorial team · Updated

A handicap evens out a match on paper. One team gets a virtual head start, measured in goals, and the bet is settled on the adjusted score instead of the real one. That turns a lopsided fixture, where the favourite pays almost nothing, into a closer bet. Two systems are in common use: the European handicap, written like 0:1 or 0:2, and the Asian handicap, written like -0.5, +1.5 or -0.75. This guide explains both, with the scores that win and lose and the payouts on split lines.

The basic idea

Take the final score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, add the handicap, and settle on the result. If the away team has a +1 handicap and the match ends 2-1 to the home side, the adjusted score is 2-2. Extra time and penalties are not counted, as in the normal result market.

The handicap only changes the bet, never the match. The real winner is still the real winner; what changes is which bet slips pay.

European handicap: 0:1, 0:2, 0:3

European handicap, also called three-way handicap, keeps all three outcomes: 1, X and 2. The draw is the adjusted draw, not the real one. The notation shows the starting score: in the usual reading, 0:1 means the away team starts one goal up, 0:2 two goals up, and 1:0 means the home team starts one goal up. Some apps write the same thing as "Home -1" or "Away +1". Always check which side the start goes to before betting.

Handicap 0:1 meaning

The away team starts with one goal.

  • 1 (home) wins if the home team wins by two goals or more.
  • X (handicap draw) wins if the home team wins by exactly one goal.
  • 2 (away) wins if the match is drawn or the away team wins.

A 1-0 home win is a handicap draw; a 2-0 is a handicap home win; a 1-1 is a handicap away win.

Handicap 0:2 meaning

The away team starts two goals up.

  • 1 needs a home win by three or more: 3-0, 4-1.
  • X needs a home win by exactly two: 2-0, 3-1.
  • 2 wins on everything else: a one-goal home win, a draw or an away win.

Handicap 0:3 meaning

The away team starts three goals up. Home needs a win by four or more, the handicap draw needs a home win by exactly three, and 2 wins on any other result. A line this big is usually offered only when the home side is a very heavy favourite.

When the home team gets the start

Lines such as 1:0 and 2:0 give the head start to the home side, usually because the away team is much stronger. Read them the same way in reverse: at 1:0, the away team must win by two or more for a bet on 2 to win, and a one-goal away win is a handicap draw.

Asian handicap: two outcomes and refunds

The Asian handicap removes the draw as a separate bet. There are only two sides, and the lines are chosen so that both sides are priced not far from even money. The sign belongs to the team you back: -1 means your team gives a one-goal start, +1 means it receives one.

Half-goal lines: -0.5, +0.5, -1.5, +1.5

The adjusted score can never be level, so there is always a winner and no refund.

  • -0.5: your team must win. It is the same as backing it in the 1X2 market.
  • +0.5: your team must win or draw. It is the same as double chance.
  • -1.5: your team must win by two or more.
  • +1.5: your team must win, draw or lose by no more than one goal.

Whole-goal lines: 0, -1, +1

Here the adjusted score can be level, and then the stake is refunded.

  • 0 (level ball): win pays, draw refunds, defeat loses. It is the same bet as draw no bet.
  • -1: win by two or more pays; win by exactly one refunds; draw or defeat loses.
  • +1: win or draw pays; defeat by exactly one refunds; defeat by two or more loses.

Quarter lines: -0.25, -0.75, +0.25, +0.75

A quarter line splits your stake in two halves on the two neighbouring lines. -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5.

Line Your team wins by 2+ Wins by 1 Draw Loses by 1
-0.25 win win half lost, half refunded lose
-0.75 win half won, half refunded lose lose
+0.25 win win half won, half refunded lose
+0.75 win win win half lost, half refunded

A worked example: 100 on -0.75 at odds of 1.90, and your team wins 1-0. The 50 on -0.5 wins and returns 95. The 50 on -1 is refunded and returns 50. You get back 145, a profit of 45. Had you placed 100 on -0.25 at 1.90 and the match finished 1-1, the 50 on 0 would come back and the 50 on -0.5 would be lost: you get back 50.

Why bettors use handicaps

A heavy favourite at very short odds is a poor single: one upset cancels many small wins. A handicap moves the price up by asking for more, a two-goal win for example. It also helps the other way round: backing an underdog at +1.5 lets you win when it loses narrowly, at a price that reflects that extra cover.

The trade-off is the same as everywhere else in betting. Every goal of handicap you give away lowers the chance of winning; every goal you receive lowers the price. Neither side is free.

How handicap chances are worked out

A handicap is a question about the winning margin, and the margin comes straight from the scorelines. Our model works out the chance of every possible score in a match. Adding up all scores where the home team wins by two or more gives the chance of home -1.5; adding all scores where it wins by exactly one gives the refund chance on home -1.

Three Asian lines map directly onto markets this site already covers. Home -0.5 is the home win in 1X2 tips; home +0.5 is double chance 1X on double chance predictions; and handicap 0 is draw no bet. For the bigger lines, the correct score predictions page shows each match's likeliest scorelines, which tells you whether a favourite's likely wins are by one goal or by several. We do not publish separate football handicap tips. The full method behind the scoreline chances is on how our predictions are made.

Fair odds still equal 1 ÷ probability. If you work out that a favourite wins by two or more 42% of the time, its -1.5 line is worth about 2.38 at a fair price.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the notation backwards. 0:2 and 2:0 are opposite bets. Check which team the start goes to.
  • Mixing up three-way and Asian. European handicap can end in a handicap draw that loses both team bets; Asian handicap never has a separate draw to bet on.
  • Ignoring split stakes. On quarter lines, half your stake can be refunded or lost while the other half wins. Count both halves when you work out the return.
  • Forgetting the 90 minutes. Goals in extra time do not change a handicap bet.

Totals use the same split logic as quarter handicaps, with lines like over 2.25; over and under goals explained covers them.

You must be 18+ to bet. A handicap changes the price, not the risk that comes with it; any bet can lose.

Frequently asked questions

What does handicap mean in betting?

A handicap gives one team a virtual goal start, or takes goals away from the other, before the bet is settled. The final score is adjusted by the handicap, and the adjusted score decides who wins the bet.

What does handicap 0:2 mean?

In the usual notation, the away team starts two goals up. A bet on 1 needs the home team to win by three or more. X wins if the home team wins by exactly two. A bet on 2 wins on any other result: a home win by one, a draw or an away win.

What does handicap 0:3 mean?

The away team gets a three-goal start. Home (1) needs a win by four or more, X needs a home win by exactly three, and 2 wins on every other result.

What does Asian handicap 0.5 mean?

At -0.5 your team must win the match; a draw or defeat loses. At +0.5 your team wins the bet with a win or a draw. Half-goal lines never refund, because the adjusted score can never be level.

What does Asian handicap away (+1.5) mean?

The away team starts with 1.5 goals. Your bet wins if the away team wins, draws or loses by exactly one goal. It loses only if the home team wins by two or more.

Is Asian handicap better than 1X2?

It is not better, just different. Asian handicap removes the draw as a separate outcome and, on whole and quarter lines, can refund all or part of the stake. Prices sit nearer even money, which suits matches with a heavy favourite.
